Junior League Teams

Our PGA Jr League Programming links learning to play and learning to compete.

Players have the option of playing either the u13 team scramble format for 3, 6 or 9 holes OR 9 holes of u17 best ball format every week. They may elect to change their preferences week to week.

u13: The ‘Classic’ Team Scramble Format Competitions feature a less stressful team scramble as opposed to stroke-play competition. All players compete from our ‘Orange Family Tees.’  While the u13 PGA Junior League is a developmental league, all children must be able to carry or pull-cart their own clubs, make their own club selections, keep score, and consistently hit the ball forward and in the air. Players younger than 8 will be evaluated on skill level and course experience for inclusion. Players who are younger or new to the game will have the option to play 3 or 6 shortened holes.

u17: Two-person Best Ball Match Play (fourball) Format
Players are grouped into teams of 2 who play their own ball for 9 holes. The lower score between them on each hole counts as the team score. A hole is won by the team with the lowest score on the hole. Flags are awarded every 3 holes, ½ points awarded for ties. Players compete from the Red or White Tees depending on age and gender.

Jr League Teams FAQ’s

It is strongly recommended that your child has their own golf clubs and bag. Contact Leighann directly (Leighann@CoachLeighann.com) and she can help you find clubs that are the right size for your child.

While clubs are strongly recommended, the only absolutely necessary equipment needed to participate is golf balls, golf tees and a ball marker (can be a coin). Optional additional equipment includes a push cart, golf towel, golf glove. Golf shoes are not highly necessary as kids can play in their sneakers.

When you registered, you chose your team practice day/time (see above for specific date/time options).  All practices are at Magnolia Green. We will meet for your chosen practice time outside the Academy Building, adjacent to the range.

If your golfer arrives for practice early, they are welcome to take their putter and a ball to practice putting on the big putting green. Please note that if your practice time starts at 6:00, we will likely still be conducting the practice before you when you arrive. Hang tight!  For the safety of everyone, we otherwise ask that kids keep clubs in their bags until practice begins. We also ask that kids not hit range balls until directed to do so.

Every practice contains a full swing and a short game component. Leighann starts each practice by taking roll call. She asks each participant if they will be playing in the upcoming match and how many holes and or which format they will be playing.  The group is then divided by age, with half of the participants starting on the range and half of the participants starting on. Half way through practice, those on the range switch to short game and vice versa.

For our youngest participants (age 7 and under), having a parent available to help young golfers stay on task is helpful but not mandatory. Otherwise, parents can feel free to drop kids off, wait and observe in the rocking chairs adjacent to the range or go visit our restaurant.

The first team kit order is placed 30 days prior to our first match. Shirts are individually screen printed to order. To ensure your child has their kit on time for the first match, please register ASAP.  Kits are handed out on your first day of practice.

The shirt color assignment for this weekend’s match will be sent with the pairings once they are completed on Friday before each Sunday match.

Your kids are asked for their format preference during practice (own ball ‘u17’, or ‘team scramble’ 9, 6 or 3 hole matches). Tee times will be assigned with the kids playing their own ball u17 format going first, then 9, 6 and 3 hole matches. Leighann creates the pairings and releases them on Friday by 5pm, with intent to give families as much advance notice as possible with regard to making plans for Sunday. Children will play in all the holes of the matches they participate in.

No problem! Just let Leighann know in advance ASAP.  Sunday morning surprise illnesses happen, please email or text Leighann ASAP.

What to Expect; IMPORTANT Match Information:.

E-mail Leighann directly with all additional e-mails that need to be added to our league’s e-blast distribution list at Leighann@CoachLeighann.com. The PGA only sends her the single email you used to register.

With regard to spectator carts; each tee time is allotted only 2 carts which may be rented in the golf shop. we apologize in advance for any inconveniences, but this is always an issue. Spectators are always welcome to walk and participants may play without spectators. We will have rangers monitoring play and the 6-seater shuttle cart roving to assist in moving players between holes. Spectators are always welcome to walk.

Pace of play is a very important life skill that can be taught from an early age.  Players are encouraged to play “Ready Golf.”  Parents can help by encouraging children to ‘play ready golf’ while the kids make their own paying decisions by reminding them about the following:

  • A good ‘rule of thumb’ is to give your Jr players 20-30 minutes to warm up (hit balls, chip & putt as well as using the bathroom and getting their equipment ready (tees in pocket, ball marker in pocket, mark ball to be played in competition.)
  • Players are responsible for themselves and their equipment. This means that while playing the hole, every player is responsible for moving their bag and clubs. During play, parents are not allowed to ‘caddy’ or carry a player’s equipment on a cart.
  • Players should also bring their own balls, clubs, tees & pull cart (if they wish to use one, which I highly recommend). Additional optional items include: water bottle, towel, ball mark repair tool, extra snacks, etc.)
  • Range Balls available free of charge for warm up on match days starting at 2:00pm – short game practice is always free and always available 😊

Please plan on having players to the tee 10 minutes before their official start time (tee time)
9 hole u17 players shall play from the red tees or white tees if they are in 9th grade. 9 & 6 hole scramble players shall play the Orange Tees unless slow pace of play dictates they move to the Light Blue tees. 3 hole matches will play from the light Blue Tees
