Meet the Team

I believe that my role as a coach and instructor is to develop, inspire, motivate and support people to realize their fullest potential. My goal is to help my students understand basic cause & effect relationships that exist within their golf swing; the cause of an errant shot and what to change when those shots occur. My collegiate coaching background is reflected in my ‘coaching mindset.’ All swing changes are ones that are implemented to make impact more powerful, consistent AND can be “played through.”

Students will not depart the lesson tee feeling like they are starting from scratch (unless of course, they are and that’s okay too). As an instructor with a coaching mindset, I have the unique opportunity to mentor and develop my students’ game from a global aspect. This not only includes teaching more efficient swing mechanics, but course management, creating efficient practice, goal setting, finding competitive platforms, mental training, managing emotions, fitness and nutrition. The golf course is the best classroom for learning and I utilize it to teach my students how to play the game of golf, not just how to efficiently swing the golf club (in the collegiate coaching world, we call this “golfing your ball.”)

I believe that it is extremely important for every golfer from those who are new to the game to single digit handicappers to find a platform (regular weekly group, league, set of scheduled tournaments, or tour) on which to compete. Everyone needs something to inspire them to practice and a measure of progress based on peer group comparison. Having studied learning, my students are advised about the learning process and how to approach implementing any new task efficiently. Clear communication is vital to the learning process the Individuals and I believe in tailoring the communication style to the student. I consider all of my students, ranging in age from 2 – 92 to be members of my “team.” Read More

Phill Hunt joins Magnolia Green after over 30 years in the golf industry, including more than 22 years as a Class A professional member of the PGA of America, before retiring and founding his own golf consultation company, TFG Golf Services, Inc. He has previously hosted a television series on golf instruction and served both as the President of the North Carolina Crystal Coast Golf Association and as a board member of the Triangle Junior Golf Association.

Some of Phill’s most recent experiences in the golf industry include time as the Head Professional at Lochmere Golf Club in Raleigh, NC; Director of Golf and General Manager of Nags Head Golf Links in Nags Head, NC; General Manager and Head Professional of Star Hill Golf Club in Cape Carteret, NC; and Director of Golf and General Manager of the Heritage Golf Club in Wake Forest, NC, along with many other professional and teaching positions in his 30+ years’ experience.

On his teaching philosophy, Phill says: “I like to keep communications simple and easy to understand, avoiding overly-technical or confusing jargon. It is easier to learn and to perform if you understand what is being asked of or told to you. In essence, what the mind conceives and understands, the body can achieve. I try to begin with constructing a solid frame for the golf swing as a foundational base from which we can progress, allowing the student to begin experiencing on-course results and success as early as possible. Improving the interior workings of the frame can come through progressive instructional sessions and fine-tuning to each individual’s unique swing and needs. Good golf is not a linear process, but a continuing search, and improving swing function and managing one’s approach to the game are the keys to enjoyable, and good, play.”

FAQ’s

The most convenient way is by clicking clicking any of the ‘Click Here’ buttons adjacent to any of the clinics above. Please feel free to e-mail or phone if you have additional questions. If you phone me and get my voicemail, please leave a short message with your contact information and I will call you back to discuss further details.

It is always a good rule of thumb to arrive 5-10 minutes before each clinic.  This gives you an opportunity to acclimate yourself with the facility and stretch beforehand so we can get started on time.  When you arrive, you will proceed directly to the Golf Academy Building, which is adjacent to the driving range.

Plan on bringing your clubs (if you have them) and your questions! Our goal is to help you reach yours!

I would recommend wearing something similar to when you play on the golf course.  If you have never played golf at all, then a good rule of thumb is at minimum non-denim pants or shorts (or skorts for women) and a shirt with a collar that you can move around in.  Men should wear a collared shirt, ladies may wear shirts without collars as long as they are not sleeveless.  If you have golf shoes, you can wear them, otherwise a pair of sneakers is perfect.

Don’t let the fact that you do not have your own set of clubs deter you!  We have many different types of demo clubs you can use (and borrow for practice between lessons).  We can also discuss equipment during your clinic session and we will make recommendations and/or referrals to some of my “preferred” clubfitters in the area based on your goals, swing and budget.
